 Brixworth Workhouse stood on the
south side of Spratton Road, a short distance west of the junction with
Northampton Road. It was opened in 1837 to house the poor of the village and of
the 29 neighbouring parishes which together formed the Brixworth Poor Law
Union. The budget for building the original structure was £4,650, with the
aim of housing up to 250 paupers. The premises were extended in 1897. A number of Howcutts who fell on
hard times were inmates at some stage of their lives. They included William
(1834-1900) - the last member of the family to remain at Brixworth - who died
in the Workhouse. Only the front part of the
building survives. It has been converted to use as offices. In October 2016,
  the property was being
offered for sale or rent. |
